Eric Rosenberg and Michael Schadler traveled to Washington, DC on the last week of March to attend the Craft Brewers Conference (CBC).  The CBC is an annual trade expo and conference organized by the Brewers Association that brings together the craft beer industry.  This year's conference had over 6,000 attendees.  Eric and Michael assist the Brewers Association in its efforts to increase exports of American craft beer around the world.

Nadia Dimova joined Bryant Christie Inc's Seattle office in March 2013 as a Software Test Project Manager. Nadia is responsible for developing, managing and executing software test plans for database and website projects. She works closely with the IT management team to craft new documentation and procedures relevant to software testing and strategies to enhance the quality of BCI's software, web and database applications.

Sherrie Hsu joined Bryant Christie Inc.'s Seattle office in March 2013 as a research assistant on the data services team. Sherrie assists with maintaining the international food additive database by entering and auditing data, conducting regulatory research and analysis, and monitoring domestic and international food regulatory policies.

Sherrie is a graduate of the University of Washington, with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. She received honors from both the university and the Economics department.

During her undergraduate career, Sherrie spent time abroad researching foreign aid effectiveness in El Salvador, studying Chinese at National Taiwan University, and studying development and international economics at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. Sherrie has worked as a legal assistant and a research assistant, and she is proficient in Mandarin Chinese.

On March 20 in Mt. Vernon, Washington, BCI's Senior Manager of Data Services provided a presentation on international pesticide maximum residue level (MRL) regulations to the Washington Blueberry and Raspberry MRL Workshop.  The Workshop was hosted by the Washington Blueberry Commission and attended by growers, exporters and handlers from the Northwest region.  The presentation covered topics that included information on the importance of MRLs and possible consequences of an MRL violation as well as updates on current market developments in priority markets for the berry industry.  The Workshop was well attended and Kimberly's presentation was well received with a lot of questions and discussion.

On February 5 in Seattle, BCI Vice President for Global Access met with Indonesia's Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Dino Patti Djalal.  The Ambassador and members of his staff came to Seattle to discuss Indonesia's recent food safety regulations and how they are affecting exports to the market.  The Ambassador explained the reasoning behind the new laws, and then listened as agricultural groups shared the challenges they have faced as the regulations have been implemented. 

The United States and Indonesia are scheduled to conduct World Trade Organization (WTO) consultations on the issue on February 19, 2013. 

The exchange was informative and cordial.

Mark Anderson joined Bryant Christie Inc's. Sacramento Office as a member of the information services team in January of 2013.  He contributes to the regulatory database service by updating, writing and editing content. In addition Mark assists in the publication of the BCI Monitor.

Mark graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts with a degree in International Relations, where he received honors from both his major and his college.  During his time at Wheaton, Mark spent a year in Shanghai, China studying political economy at Fudan University.  Before joining BCI, Mark worked for United Winegrowers for Sonoma County publishing policy briefs related to natural conservation efforts.  Prior to that, Mark worked as an assistant social worker in Guayaquil, Ecuador where he developed proficiency in Spanish.

On January 15, Eric Rosenberg (Vice President), Erin Poffenbaugh (Manager, Regulatory Database) and Mark Moore (Manager, Database Development) staffed a Bryant Christie Inc. booth at the 99th Annual Northwest Food Processors Expo and Conference in Portland, Oregon.  The event is put on by the Northwest Food Processors Association (NWFPA), which represents the interests of food processors in Idaho, Oregon and Washington. 

Bryant Christie Inc. was provided space in an area set aside for government agencies and other organizations that offer financial or information resources to NWFPA members.  Specifically, BCI was asked to demonstrate its regulatory database services including the company's chemical maximum residue level database, the international food additive database, and customized regulatory databases built for individual exporters.  Additional information on these systems can be found within BCI's website.

Josh Weiner recently spoke on the topic of the U.S. cranberry industry's global marketing strategy during a seminar series in Mainland China. Over 240 members of the Chinese food and beverage trade attended the seminars which were held in Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen. In addition to Mr. Weiner's presentation on successful cranberry sales and marketing strategies, attendees learned about U.S. cranberry industry dynamics, growing practices, and health benefits from presentations by other experts in the field. Based on increased recognition of their market potential, cranberry products are becoming more widely available in China including at bakeries, retail outlets, and restaurants. In fact, U.S. cranberry exports to Mainland China have increased by almost 700% over the past five years.
