EU Proposes Draft MRLs for Multiple Active Ingredients

On May 24, Denmark's Høringsportalen posted draft MRL amendments under consideration by the European Union's Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed. These include:

  • SANTE/10656/2016 Rev. 1Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain FZB24, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain MBI 600, Beauveria bassiana strain NPP111B005, Beauveria bassiana strain 147, clayed charcoal, cyclaniliprole, dichlorprop, ethephon, etridiazole, flonicamid, fluazifop-P, hydrogen peroxide, metaldehyde, penconazole, spinetoram, tau-fluvalinate and Urtica spp.
  • SANTE/11706/2016 Rev. 2: fenpropidin and pymetrozine

 Relevant proposed MRLs have been added to the Global MRL Database.

FSANZ Publishes Amendment for Avilamycin MRLs

On May 25, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) published Amendment No. 170 establishing MRLs for avilamycin in specific pig commodities. These MRLs were previously proposed via Application A1133

Established veterinary drug MRLs appear in the veterinary drug section of the Global MRL Database. Please note that we are currently upgrading this section of the Global MRL Database to improve both its design and scope of veterinary drug MRLs. Once this upgrade is completed, users will also be able to subscribe to additional data and features not currently available.

Objections and requests for hearings must be received by July 24, 2017. The amended MRLs will be available in the Global MRL Database on May 26, 2017.

Canada Proposes MRLs for Nicosulfuron and Dodine

On May 25, Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) proposed MRLs for nicosulfuron on sorghum and dodine on bananas.

Kenya Proposes Tea MRLs

On May 23, the Kenya Bureau of Standards notified the WTO of draft specifications for herbal and fruit infusions, orthodox tea, and purple tea. MRLs from these proposals align with those established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

Comments should be received by June 5, 2017. MRLs from these proposals will display in the Global MRL Database on May 24, 2017.

European CVMP Adopts Vet Drug MRL Opinion on Bromelain

On May 15, Europe’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Veterinary Use (CVMP) published an adopted opinion recommending the inclusion of bromelain as an allowed substance for porcine species.

Based on the CVMP opinion, the European Commission will adopt a legally binding Regulation establishing the MRL for the substance. Applicants may request re-examination of any CVMP opinion within 15 days of its publication.

On May 16, the Australia Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) published Gazette No. 10 – 16 May 2017. Pages 26-27 of the gazette list draft MRLs and pages 32-33 list amendments to MRLs for pesticides on various commodities.

Comments on the draft MRLs must be submitted to APVMA by June 13, 2017. Relevant proposed and amended MRLs will appear in the Global MRL Database on May 17, 2017.

49th Session of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues held in Beijing, China

The 49th session of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR) was held April 24–29 in Beijing, China. Kimberly Berry, Director of Regulatory Data, and Ann Stevenson, Manager of Regulatory Databases, attended the meeting on behalf of several commodity groups.

Nearly 490 MRLs were recommended for inclusion in the international Codex pesticide MRL standard. These will be officially established if approved by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) during their July meeting.

Other topics discussed at the meeting include: revisions to the Codex Classification of Food and Feed; recommending for adoption the guidelines on performance criteria for methods of analysis for the determination of pesticide residues in food; a possible revision of the international estimate of short-term intake (IESTI) equation; an extraordinary session of the Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) in May 2019 to be hosted by Canada; and the 2018 JMPR evaluations for Codex Schedules and Priority Lists of Pesticides.

Costa Rica Publishes Updated List of Adopted MRLs

On May 6, Costa Rica's State Phytosanitary Service (SFE) published an updated list of MRLs adopted by Costa Rica. The MRLs in the list are applicable to domestic and imported products and are updated periodically throughout the year.

Adopted MRLs will display in the Global MRL Database by May 9, 2017.
