Codex Publishes Final Report of 50th Session of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues

The 50th Session of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR) was held April 9-14, 2018 in Haikou, China. Kimberly Berry, Director of Regulatory Data, and Ann Stevenson, Manager of Regulatory Databases, attended the meeting on behalf of several commodity groups.

Nearly 500 MRLs were recommended for inclusion in the international Codex pesticide MRL standard. These will be officially established if approved by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) during their July meeting.

Other topics discussed at the meeting include: revisions to the Codex Classification of Food and Feed; a possible revision of the international estimate of short-term intake (IESTI) equation; an extraordinary session of the Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) in May 2019 to be hosted by Canada; the 2019 JMPR evaluations for Codex Schedules and Priority Lists of Pesticides; and the ongoing development of a national registration database of pesticides.

On May 21, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) announced proposed MRL changes for 2, 4-D, chlorfluazuron, chlormequat, picoxystrobin, pyribencarb, metalaxyl, metalaxyl-M,  and spinosad. These changes were reported via the United States Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service.

Comments are due to the Embassy by June 4, 2018. Relevant proposed MRLs will display in the Global MRL Database on May 25, 2018.
