Alyson Segawa recently attended Harvest Tour on behalf of the Washington State Wine Commission (WSWC).  Every year, WSWC hosts a group of Japanese trade and media to tour wine country and learn about Washington State as a premier wine producing region.  Attendees included sommeliers, wine writers, importers, and on premise trade.  Alyson assists WSWC in its efforts to increase exports of Washington State wine around the world.

Michelle Paul joined Bryant Christie Inc.'s Sacramento office in September 2013 as a member of the firm's international marketing group. Michelle will assist with grant writing and administration related to United States Department of Agriculture export assistance programs. She will also provide support to account managers for activity planning and implementation, client communications, financial management, and research.

Prior to joining BCI, Michelle worked as a legislative aide in the capitol office of California State Senator Steve Knight, who currently represents the 21st Senate District. In her role, she tracked and facilitated bills through the legislative process, drafted correspondence on behalf of the Senator, and served as staff consultant to the Senator on water and agricultural policy. Additionally, she has experience in commercial property management.

Michelle is a graduate of California State University, Fresno, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. She holds a Masters of Arts degree in International Affairs with a specialization in American Foreign Policy from California State University, Sacramento.

BCI President James Christie was invited to speak at the Cherry Growers of Australia national industry conference held the week of August 5, 2013, in Canberra Australia.  The theme of the 2013 conference was, “Breaking down Barriers – Navigating Oceans of Opportunities.”  James was a featured speaker and presented on the topic of global market access.  International and national delegates at the conference included cherry and other fruit growers, representatives from government departments, Horticulture Australia, industry suppliers, and other industry associates.

Eric Rosenberg and Karsten Lundquist attended the Vancouver flower auction on August 9.  The auction, which is held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays year-round, is the largest flower auction in North America.  It is a traditional Dutch auction where buyers bid on plants and flowers as the prices drop. Eric and Karsten toured the auction with Chief Executive Officer, Bob Pringle.  The visit was part of a research project in which Bryant Christie Inc. is exploring opportunities to expand tropical flower and plant imports to Canada.  Though the auction is owned by British Columbia's greenhouse flower growers, an import component helps satisfy the market's demand for products not grown on Canadian soil.

BCI demonstrated the International Food Additive Database (www.FoodAdditiveDatabase.com) at the 2013 Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Expo from July 14th – 16th in Chicago, IL.

The Database is freely accessible and includes over 80,000 food additive use regulations in 24 markets around the world. Users can compare maximum use levels between countries for similar food types, view relevant regulatory notes and terminology, and download results in user-friendly Excel or PDF formats. This free resource is the result of collaboration between BCI, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Brooks Erickson joined Bryant Christie in May 2013 as a member of the firm's international marketing group. His responsibilities include supporting account managers in preparing export strategies, market research, and grant writing related to USDA export assistance programs.

Before joining BCI, Brooks worked in Seoul, South Korea for over four years as an English instructor, an editor/researcher at a patent law firm, and as an associate for a consulting company developing business relationships between the UAE and East Asia. He also co-founded an event production company, hosting bi-monthly events around Seoul.

Brooks graduated from Washington State University's College of Business with a degree in international business. He has also studied at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic and Sejong University in Seoul, South Korea.

Eric Rosenberg and Michael Schadler traveled to Washington, DC on the last week of March to attend the Craft Brewers Conference (CBC).  The CBC is an annual trade expo and conference organized by the Brewers Association that brings together the craft beer industry.  This year's conference had over 6,000 attendees.  Eric and Michael assist the Brewers Association in its efforts to increase exports of American craft beer around the world.

Nadia Dimova joined Bryant Christie Inc's Seattle office in March 2013 as a Software Test Project Manager. Nadia is responsible for developing, managing and executing software test plans for database and website projects. She works closely with the IT management team to craft new documentation and procedures relevant to software testing and strategies to enhance the quality of BCI's software, web and database applications.

Sherrie Hsu joined Bryant Christie Inc.'s Seattle office in March 2013 as a research assistant on the data services team. Sherrie assists with maintaining the international food additive database by entering and auditing data, conducting regulatory research and analysis, and monitoring domestic and international food regulatory policies.

Sherrie is a graduate of the University of Washington, with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. She received honors from both the university and the Economics department.

During her undergraduate career, Sherrie spent time abroad researching foreign aid effectiveness in El Salvador, studying Chinese at National Taiwan University, and studying development and international economics at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. Sherrie has worked as a legal assistant and a research assistant, and she is proficient in Mandarin Chinese.

On March 20 in Mt. Vernon, Washington, BCI's Senior Manager of Data Services provided a presentation on international pesticide maximum residue level (MRL) regulations to the Washington Blueberry and Raspberry MRL Workshop.  The Workshop was hosted by the Washington Blueberry Commission and attended by growers, exporters and handlers from the Northwest region.  The presentation covered topics that included information on the importance of MRLs and possible consequences of an MRL violation as well as updates on current market developments in priority markets for the berry industry.  The Workshop was well attended and Kimberly's presentation was well received with a lot of questions and discussion.
