On October 31, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare posted Food Safety Update 1031 No. 1 affecting numerous active ingredients.

Relevant MRL changes will appear in the BCGlobal Pesticide MRL Database next week.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) recently published JMPR 2019 September Meeting: Summary Report, recommending MRLs that will be considered at the 2020 CCPR meeting to be held March 30 - April 4, 2020, in Guangzhou, China.

The Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) is the scientific committee that reviews MRL submissions to Codex and proposes new and revised MRLs for the CCPR to consider at its annual meeting.

Relevant proposed MRLs have been added to the BCGlobal Pesticide MRL Database.

On October 30, Argentina updated the Argentinian Food Code through Resolución Conjunta 31/2019. All updates are effective from October 31, 2019.

On October 30, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a revised reasoned opinion on the review of the existing MRLs for glyphosate according to Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005.

Proposed MRLs from this reasoned opinion will display in the BCGlobal Pesticide MRL Database on October 31, 2019.

On October 29, the European Union published the following Commission Regulations amending MRLs for active substances in or on certain products:

  • Reg. (EU) 2019/1791 - 1-decanol, 2,4-D, ABE-IT 56, cyprodinil, dimethenamid, fatty alcohols, florpyrauxifen-benzyl, fludioxonil, fluopyram, mepiquat, pendimethalin, picolinafen, pyraflufen-ethyl, pyridaben, S-abscisic acid, and trifloxystrobin
  • Reg. (EU) 2019/1792 - amitrole, fipronil, flupyrsulfuron-methyl, imazosulfuron, isoproturon, orthosulfamuron, and triasulfuron

Relevant pending MRL changes will display in the BCGlobal Pesticide MRL Database on October 31, 2019.

On October 28, the U.S. EPA announced the receipt of pesticide petitions to establish or modify MRLs for active ingredients.

Comments must be received by November 27, 2019. MRLs from these proposals will display in the BCGlobal Pesticide MRL Database on October 31, 2019.

The U.S. EPA recently established tolerances for residues of fenbuconazole, pendimethalin, sulfoxaflor, and mandipropamid in or on various commodities.

Objections and requests for hearings must be received by December 24, 2019 (fenbuconazole, pendimethalin, sulfoxaflor) and December 27, 2019 (mandipropamid). The established MRLs are currently available in the BCGlobal Pesticide MRL Database.

On October 30, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published two scientific opinions, on the re-evaluation of benzyl alcohol (E 1519) and of sulphuric acid and its sodium, potassium, calcium and ammonium salts (E 513, 514 (i), 514 (ii), 515 (i), 515 (ii), 516 and 517) as food additives.

Shelby Sackett joined BCI’s Sacramento office in September 2019, as a member of the Market Development Team.

Shelby assists in preparing market development reports and presentations for clients, and supports the execution of client promotional strategies. She also participates in grant writing and administration related to the United States Department of Agriculture’s export assistance programs.

Shelby graduated with distinguished honors from the University of California, San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies and Political Science, and a minor in Middle Eastern Studies. While obtaining her degree, Shelby studied abroad at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.  She also participated in summer programs in both Egypt and Italy.
