On June 19, the US EPA published a final rule in the US Federal Register amending the MRL regulation for the active ingredient acetamiprid. Objections and requests for hearing must be received on or before August 19.

On June 17, 2013, the Uganda National Bureau of Standards notified the WTO of draft food specification standards for Tomato puree and Amaranth flour, which contain specific food additive information.  Uganda also proposed several other draft standards without specific food additive regulations.  The proposed date of adoption on these standards is August 4, 2013.

Uganda's food additive use regulations, which defer to Codex Alimentarius standards, are included in the International Food Additive Database.

On June 14, 2013, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) notified the WTO of its Proposed Revision of the Specification and Standards for Foods and Food Additives under the Food Sanitation Act. The proposal revises the standards of use for various processing aids.  The comment deadline is August 12, 2013. 

Japan's food additive use regulations are included in the International Food Additive Database, though processing aids typically do not fall within the scope of the database. More information on Japan's regulations can be found on MHLW's Food Additive page.

On June 11, 2013, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) publically announced a draft amendment to its Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additive) Regulation, 2011.  The proposed amendment contains various regulatory changes to the use of food additives. The final date for comments is July 13, 2013.

The International Food Additive Database will be updated to include the amendment once it is established and in effect.

On June 15, 2013, the European Commission published Commission Regulation (EU) No 545/2013, amending Annex I to Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008 regarding the flavouring substance 3-acetyl-2,5-dimethylthiophene.

The amendment entered into force on June 16, 2013.  The European Union's food additive use regulations are included in the International Food Additive Database, though flavorings typically do not fall within the scope of the database.

On June 11, 2013, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published "Statement on Allura Red AC and other sulphonated mono azo dyes authorised as food and feed additives."  This scientific assessment concerns the health safety of various coloring agents used in food.

June 4, 2013, Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) amended their Standards for Pesticide Residue Limits in Foods. New and revised MRLs are established for the active ingredients clothianidin, cyazofamid, cyhalothrin, deltamethrin, tau-fluvalinate, imidacloprid, methomyl, methoxyfenozide, and oxydemeton-methyl. Specific MRL changes are available here.

As previously reported, Taiwan recently amended its food safety law in light of food safety concerns and incidents.  On June 11, 2013, Taiwan's Department of Health (DOH) published a news announcement, "The Amendment to Act Governing Food Sanitation Imposes Comprehensively Stricter Penalties on Non-Compliant Businesses."  According to the announcement, Taiwan's Legislative Yuan passed “The Draft Amendment to Act Governing Food Sanitation” on May 31, 2013.  The amendment increases penalties for violations of food sanitation and safety standards, including food additive use standards.
