In light of an upcoming Senior Economic Officials Meeting (SEOM) of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the ASEAN Food and Beverage Alliance (AFBA) recently submitted a White Paper addressing the industry's view on food sector harmonization in facilitating the move toward greater ASEAN economic integration.  The paper discusses technical barriers to trade and potential benefits of standardizing authorization procedures for food ingredients and additives.

ASEAN includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.  Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam's food additive use regulations are currently included in the International Food Additive Database.   

June 6, 2013

On June 6, 2013, the Lao People's Democratic Republic notified the WTO of its proposed amended Food Law. This law establishes general food safety standards and includes clauses relating to the definitions and use of food additives. If implemented, this version would replace Law on Food No.04/NA of 2004.  The final date for comments is June 30, 2013.  

Laos's food additive regulations are not currently included in the International Food Additive Database.
