Sarah Gelpi Hooker, BCI’s Director of Market Development, was recently selected to serve on the International Fresh Produce Association’s Global Development Committee, which seeks to identify expansion opportunities and priorities for the association and its diverse membership.

Ahead of the Fruit Logistica trade show this week in Berlin, Sarah had the opportunity to participate in the first in-person meeting of the Global Development Committee, as well as IFPA’s Executive Leadership Summit, alongside industry and IFPA leadership. These forums provided an excellent platform for leaders across the produce value chain to connect and discuss common issues concerning trade and market access, demand generation, food safety and regulatory affairs, talent development, and more.

Thank you to IFPA for the opportunity to engage in these discussions.

BCI’s Market Development business unit works closely with the California cherry industry on their international market development program. As a part of these efforts, Shelby Sackett on our team is overseeing the development of new photography and videography assets to be used in California cherry international market development collateral and promotion.

To kick off the project, Shelby (BCI Market Development Assistant) and Sarah (BCI Market Development Director) took a trip down to Linden, California on Wednesday to oversee a photo and video shoot of California cherry orchards in bloom. Bloom in the Linden area is coming along very nicely, and bees were hard at work in the orchards, pollinating this year’s crop.

The next phase of this project will include more photography and videography both in the packing house and in the fields during the harvest, which is expected to begin in late April.

In February, several BCI Sacramento-office staff had the opportunity to tour the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company facility in Chico, California.  During the tour, the BCI team learned about the history of Sierra Nevada, the varieties of hops used, and the company’s sustainability initiatives.  Overall, the tour was interactive and informative, and provided excellent insight into each step of the brewing process.

Sierra Nevada is the third largest craft brewery in the U.S. and one of the largest buyers of hops in the world.  They are also an active member of the Brewers Association (BA).  BCI works with the BA on its Export Development Program—promoting and facilitating exports of U.S. craft beer.
