The 42nd Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) was held from July 8-12, 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland. Codex, which is run jointly by the WHO and FAO, sets various guidelines to promote international food safety. Standards adopted by the CAC that contain updated food additive provisions are detailed in the report. These food additive revisions were recommended by the Codex Committee on Food Additives in April

On July 1, Indonesia’s National Agency of Drug and Food Control published a new food additive regulation. This regulation is effective from July 1, 2019 with a 24 month grace period for registered products.

Recently, MERCOSUR published MERCOSUR/GMC/Res. No 28 excluding certain aluminum containing additives from various food categories. A grace period is included lasting until October 1, 2019. Member states must incorporate the resolution by March 5, 2019.

The 2018 version of Codex Standard 192-1995, General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA), has been published, incorporating revisions adopted at this year’s Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) meeting.

On March 22, the Malaysian Ministry of Health published an updated consolidation of its food additive regulations. This consolidation includes amendments made in 2017.

At the beginning of this year, Turkey's Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock adopted an updated Regulation on Maximum Residue Limits of Food Codex Pesticides establishing and updating MRLs on various food and animal commodities (link in Turkish). These MRLs are currently in effect.

This updated regulation is part of Turkey's effort to harmonize with MRL values and standards maintained by the European Union. It should be noted that MRLs established in this regulation are not always aligned with MRLs currently enforced by the EU, as the EU frequently updates its MRLs.

Adopted and updated MRLs from this regulation will display in the Global MRL Database by April 1, 2017.
